This is a super nice 1964 Selmer Mark VI Tenor saxophone with original lacquer, American engraving, and a full overhaul just completed through GetASax. This horn was the main tenor of a local pro player until he died, and then we got it overhauled to sell for his widow on consignment. It was the one he ended up on after a lot of horn swapping over the years, and it plays beautifully. The overhaul was done with Pisoni Italian leather pads and really nice reusable slightly domed Selmer-style brass resonators similar to what Selmer used in the 1950s. (This is my favorite setup for a Selmer Mark VI). This tenor has been played a fair bit, because it plays well, so it has some signs of wear and use, though the original lacquer is also still looking great. The chromatic F# keyguard is resoldered, there’s some general lacquer wear from use, and there’s a plugged mic pickup on the back of the neck in the Selmer badge (not very noticeable). Some miscellaneous dents and dings removed, as you can see from the lines in the lacquer, back of the bow and body tube area. The neck shows signs of slight pull down, but not bad. It is more just minor flexing over time rather than any actual damage.
The tone is dark, fairly focused, and powerful, and reminds me of a late 5-digit tenor sound wise. The overhaul feels great under the fingers — dry and snappy like a brand new horn — and the low Bb pops out effortlessly even at low volumes with plenty of saturation. It’s a joy to play a nice Mark VI like this with the complete overhaul done. It’s the closest to playing a brand new one that you can get, because the overhaul gets it back to mechanically near new condition in terms of pad seal and the feel under the fingers. It includes the newish ProTec case, or you can get it in the original grey samsonite style zippered Selmer case, or you can swap the ProTec for a BAM Classic which will protect it really well in shipping. Only one available!
