This is an extremely rare and fantastic soprano saxophone. It is a Selmer Mark VI from the same serial range that John Coltrane played (including My Favorite Things, and In a Sentimental Mood etc.). It is original lacquer, and it has the rare American engraving, including a flower on the bell. This horn was pro-owned and has been played on numerous recordings. It has been my personal soprano for a while now, and it was most recently played by Ravi Coltrane when he came to town for a show and needed a good soprano. This horn has a fresh overhaul done by Matt Stohrer, who is a widely respected tech whose work is among the best in the business. It has no dents or dings, and no resolders that I can see. There are some lines in the lacquer where someone put the horn on a mandril. I don't see any evidence of a dent being removed, so perhaps it was to remove a slight body bend. In any case, the horn is straight, shows no signs of past dents, and is in top playing condition. The tone is very Coltrane-era soprano: warm, rich, pleasant. It isn't a bright horn, and it doesn't want to play really loudly. But it is a soprano that people want to listen to, and that is something rare indeed.
