Oxidized vintage hard rubber, but that would clean off if you wanted to. It has light tooth scratches that look worse than they are because of the oxidation. This would look new with a tiny bit of TLC. Hard to find a nicer short shank Soloist. This will either get you a nice classical tone, or complete your set with a 5-digit VI, or you can open it up and do the Kenny Garrett thing for jazz if you like. These sound a lot better than a Meyer on a modern Selmer in my opinion. Kind of a natural upgrade for your Series II or III alto.
