The Selmer Reference 54 alto is my favorite modern Selmer for jazz. It's also quite a bit less expensive than buying a new Selmer. The Ref 54 is tons of fun to play, with a warm, complex, interesting-and-recognizably-Selmer tone that works great for jazz, band, and commercial music. These are less often used for 'classical saxophone' repertoire, where you tend to see people opting for the Series II, Supreme, or the new Signature model. I love the styling of the Reference 54 altos - the engraving pops really nicely and the lacquer color is just right. If you want a beautiful modern Selmer with great intonation, great tone, beauty, engraving, and one that already had a thorough setup so that it plays its best and will keeping doing so for a long time, then this is the horn for you!
