People always seem to refer to the Buffet Super Dynaction as the ‘poor man’s Mark VI,’ and while it does have a lot in common with the Mark VI, it also has its own thing going on. This one was made around the time that the early Selmer Mark VI’s were being made, also in France, and both models have a medium dark tone, a lyrical French ‘core’ to the sound, and good intonation and comfortable ergonomics. Beyond that, the Buffets like this with the earlier serials have a beautiful, dark, complex tone compared to later SDAs. All of the SDA’s have a wide open ‘operatic’ feel to playing them, and I think the upper register tone on the Buffet is superior to most Mark VI’s. It doesn’t thin out or get nasal at all. This particular Super Dynaction had a recent overhaul done locally in Raleigh at Flying Squirrel Music, and it feels great under the fingers and plays effortlessly. It won’t need anything other than minor tune ups for a long time. It tunes well, and sounds great. It’s original lacquer with some normal wear from playing, which looks good according to me. A couple of my favorite saxophones ever looked played in like this and just sounded amazing. Only one available! Ships in a Buffet ‘Lifton’ black original case.
