gs-great-neck
GS Great Neck Brilhart Alto Copy: Warm, Lyrical, Complex

OK I I really think this mouthpiece could change the alto saxophone landscape. It's meant to be a second major option for alto players besides all the Meyer-style pieces on the market. Besides the GS New York / New York Meyer, which is brighter and more focused, the other vintage alto sax mouthpiece that we felt was most iconic, most played by famous players, and most fun to play, is the Brilhart copy we are calling the GS Great Neck. It's a precise copy of a wonderful original Brilhart Tonalin Great Neck New York alto saxophone mouthpiece (Original facing measured .073 like a Meyer 5). The early Brilhart mouthpieces from the 1940's made in Great Neck, NY were the best made, and rarest of any of the Brilharts. This is an exact copy of the best one that we have ever played. It was picked out of more than 70 Brilhart alto mouthpieces as the stand out winner.

You could buy 50 or even 100 original Brilhart mouthpieces from the 40's-80's and you might not find another one that was as good as the GS Great Neck. Plus, the GS Great Neck is completely hand faced to perfection, which really makes it even better than an original injection molded non-hand-faced Brilhart in a way. This is the first time in history that a repeatably perfect Brilhart alto piece has been available.

It's warmer and more complex and lyrical sounding than a Meyer style alto piece. There's more of an 'Ah' vowel sound to the tone, where a Meyer is more of an 'ee,' but it also isn't stuffy the way the Jody Jazz 'custom dark' can be (at least the handful of them I've played have felt pretty dead). The GS Great Neck gives you a tone that blends really well in a section, but also projects when you push it. Be sure to listen to all three tunes in the video below to get the full range of what it can do.

Marshall Royal famously played a gold Conn 6M and a Tonalin throughout his early career, so we copied that setup for the first tune below. Maceo Parker famously played Brilharts over his entire career with James Brown and after, and his tone is what we were going for in the Selmer Mark VI/funk sample after that. Maceo was always chasing that perfect mouthpiece though, even with his amazing talents, because the vintage Brilharts just aren't that consistent. The GS Great Neck I think surpasses the original in its consistency and playability, and every one of them we sell is exactly perfect out if the box.
