This is a clean, near mint example of one of the best sopranos ever made. The Yanagisawa S-991 soprano is handmade in Japan in a small, house-sized factory in which all the workers are highly-skilled artists. That makes these horns have the best build-quality of any saxophones made today. This soprano has a great tone – clear, round, with a delicate core. It is very mouthpiece-friendly, so you can make it sound much darker or much more aggressive depending on what piece you use. (And it is worth experimenting with soprano mouthpieces – trust me!) The stock Yanagisawa mouthpiece is a great place to start – dependable, middle-of-the-road tonally, with a quality facing.
This horn is in beautiful condition with no dents or past repairs except for one small ding inside the bell. Both necks are in great shape too. The pads are good and the horn plays very well and responds well across the range of the instrument. It’s hard to beat a 991 like this for quality of build and workmanship, for tone quality, intonation or ergonomics. This should be a turn-key purchase for a beautiful, world-class soprano.
