The Yanagisawa A9933 is a special order model that is near the top of the line that Yanagisawa makes. New, these go for $9089 (AWO33 is the modern model designation), so this is an amazing deal on a used one that just got a full clean oil and adjust and that plays its best! This deluxe Yanagisawa has a solid silver bell and neck, and the neck is also gold plated on top of that, which is special order. There is some light lacquer wear from use, and no significant past damage at all besides just some playing wear. The cool thing about Yanagisawa’s use of different metals to build its saxophones, is that changing the base metal actually does affect the tone in a consistent way. I describe the silver Yanagisawas as having more focus, and a complex, dark core to the tone, but also with a little extra power and projection. It’s hard to describe but easy to feel in person. They’re great fun to play and everything about the build and playing experience says precision and ease. My repairman calls these the ‘Lexus of saxophones’ because you’re just getting quality all the way down. The silver ones are rare and hard to find, so someone should definitely grab this and get playing on it! It’s not mouthpiece picky. You can make it sound bright with something like the GS New York in the video below, or darken it up with a Vandoren, Selmer, or the upcoming GS Hyperion Brilhart copy.
