Here is a very nice example of a Yanagisawa A-990 alto saxophone from Yanagisawa. This is Yanagisawa’s top professional model from the 1990’s and it is the predecessor of the current A-991. There are only very minor differences between the 990 and the 991, and the 990 is to my ears slightly warmer and more complex in timbre than the 991. This horn has virtually all of its original lacquer intact, and it has no dents, dings or past repairs, save a small dent that was removed from the bell flare. The neck, body tube, and bottom bow are all flawless. This horn has really not been played much since it was new. The pads are in very good condition, and all are sealing very well.
Sonically, this Yanagisawa is easily as good as any other professional alto saxophone that is being made today. It has amazingly good intonation, and a clear, round, medium bright tone that is suitable for all kinds of different playing situations, from classical to jazz and beyond. Ergonomics are very comfortable, and the horn has ribbed construction (posts that hold the keywork attach to ribs of metal that are, in turn attached to the body tube) giving the keywork added strength and durability. No one beats Yanagisawa for build quality. These horns just play and play without picking up leaks, because the keywork stays tight and smooth. The spring tension and pad feel is also very nice.
I have had several people come over looking at other horns and play this one and say WOW! If I needed an alto, I’d buy this! It is a fantastic player with a very good tone. It’s a deal at this price. Whoever gets this alto will be getting a great deal.
