The bronze and solid silver Yanagisawa tenors are among the best tenor saxophones made today. The Yanagisawa company makes only saxophones, and they make them with a continuous commitment to improvement. They have the best build quality of any modern saxophone, across the board, and the best factory setup and pad work, which is very important.

This is the T-992 model, which is identical to the T-991 in design. The difference is that the 992 is made of solid bronze, rather than brass. The keys are still brass, giving the horn a nice two-tone look. This horn is cosmetically in excellent condition, with very minor scratches on the back of the body, and some lacquer wear on the neck. There are no dents, no dings, no resolders, no past repairs, and no other flaws on the sax. It ships in a contoured modern case.

Inevitably someone will want to know about the difference in sound between 991 and 992. In my experience with a few dozen horns, I would say that the 991 is basically a clear, round tone. The 992 is a little darker and more complex, and perhaps a bit warmer as well. I tend to prefer the 992 to the 991 on tenor. These horns work well with a wide range of mouthpieces, and that is, after all, the most important way to shape the overall tone.

With the money you save by buying a nice (slightly used) horn, you can both afford to buy a great mouthpiece (strongly recommended, whether from me or elsewhere) and easily get your money back out down the road without any trouble, should that become a necessity. After all, used saxophones are not like used cars – they don’t wear out if you take care of them. Used in great shape is just as good as new, only less expensive.
