Ah the elusive affordable tenor sax that is good quality and plays well! I NEVER have these available, but here one is! The Yamaha 475 is made with the tooling from the Yamaha ‘purple logo’ 62 saxophones, so it sounds really good. Those are among the most desirable Yamahas for tone, as they sound more like a vintage Selmer with a warmth and complexity that you don’t get on later Yamaha 62 or 82s, though those are also excellent saxophones and superior in other ways. Still, the 475 is a true intermediate tenor – it’s built with tooling from a pro horn, but it has basic engraving, and lacks some other bells and whistles. But it plays well, tunes well, sounds great, feels good under the fingers, and just gets the job done. If you need a quality tenor but your budget just doesn’t reach above $1500, this would be pretty hard to beat. It has normal lacquer wear from use – scratches, some play wear, and it had a few small dings removed when I got it. But it’s a Yamaha, and it’s a tenor, and it’s in good playing condition. So if the scratches don’t bother you, then you save a lot of money. A new YTS-480 has less good build quality than this horn, and costs DOUBLE the price.
