Here’s an early Yamaha 475 alto, which is actually a surprisingly good alto. It looks like it was made with the tooling for the original version of the professional Yamaha purple logo 62, so it’s a good deal for the money. (The soprano 475 of this is a real sleeper by the way – basically a purple logo 62 soprano for cheap!) This horn needs a repad, and it would be a perfect repad project for someone who is interested in doing a first repad, because it’s a Yamaha – it comes apart and goes back together easily, the keywork is modern and has no surprises, it’s well made etc. It has some moderate lacquer wear from use, and it has had a couple of dents removed to make it an easier project for someone (one from the back of the bow, and one from the bell flare). This includes the original case in good condition. It’s way way better than your standard Chinese or Taiwanese student saxophone – it’s more like a pro horn in disguise. This would be perfect for someone who doubles on alto, needs a gigging alto, or a student who needs a good alto to grow into, but who has a tight budget. As long as you have a local music store to put some pads in, you can get a good horn for a great price that should serve you well for years.
