Here’s a nice, dependable alto saxophone from Yamaha. This is the same type of alto that I first got when I was in school band, (also used) and it served me well. Actually, the students playing Yamahas tended to end up in first chair more often than their colleagues who had brand new saxophones of other makes, becausethe Yamaha is just better made, sounds better, holds up better, and needs less maintenance than other entry-level saxophones. It plays better than many other saxophones billed as “intermediate/professional” in fact.
You will sometimes see YAS-23 altos on craigslist or ebay for a bit less (maybe $400-$600). The difference with this one is that it has had a recent full repad (all new pads), which costs at least $350, if not more like $500 to do, and which is necessary on most used older saxophones. When you figure that in, this is a good deal as well as being a solid horn. Let me know if you are just starting out and need any saxophone accessories. I often will have extras of some of this stuff and am happy to throw in what I can.
