One of the loudest tenors in the shop, this SML Rev D / Gold Medal tenor is going to make someone very happy. Yes, the finish shows some wear, and yes, it has had the bell/body brace and the neck receiver resoldered, but it is a fantastic tenor saxophone. The pads are mostly older, although some look on the newer side. I was blown away by how well it plays given the old pads. With an overhaul, this horn will be amazing. The first thing you notice is the volume. This thing just gives and gives sound wise. Also, the tone is dark but powerful, and the palm key and upper register tone is so fat and full as to be almost a different instrument from most modern tenors with their more shrill upper registers. It’s kind of astounding. So if you have been put off by the more expensive SML tenors out there, get this one and play it. I guarantee it will be a world-class player when overhauled. It already shows tons of potential as is. Includes the original case, though you might want to upgrade to a Hiscox or a ProTec XL for safe shipping.
This horn is original ‘permagold‘ finish, which looks like gold, but isn’t. Selmer and SML seem to be the main companies who made saxophones in this rare finish. My personal SML is the same finish as this, and plays very similarly. As you probably know, the ‘Rev D’ is just our name for SML’s professional tenor saxophone, which then won a gold medal at the musical instrument expo in The Hague, SML proudly displayed this ‘Gold Medal’ accolade on the bell after that. So if you are looking for an SML Gold Medal 1 tenor, that’s what this is, only just before it won the gold medal with this design.
