For your enjoyment, here is a cool SML Gold Medal saxophone stenciled “Lucerne” and exported to the USA, where it has sat in a warehouse for the last 40+ years. This horn was never sold and is new old stock. It has a few small bumps and bruises from storage, but even so, it’s a joy to see the unique rose-gold lacquer that has aged evenly over time, without any wear or even fingerprints on it!
This horn is exactly like the corresponding Gold Medal model, except that it has straight tone holes (like a Selmer or a Yamaha, and most SML stencils, and indeed the “Gold Medal II”) rather than rolled tone holes (like a vintage Conn or Couf/Keilwerth). Straight tone holes are easier for your tech to keep in good adjustment, so this is an advantage for most people compared to rolled. The tone is dark, powerful, and lyrical, making it one of the best sounding saxophones ever made– though not the most expensive, which is good news for saxophone players. Here’s your one chance to buy a new one.
