The ultra-rare SML Coleman Hawkins Special saxophones are the most desirable SML saxophones in my experience. They are also uniquely fun to play and really projecting. The basic tone is dark and complex, like a Conn 10M, but with more of a focused core than a Conn, and a ton of power but without being too spread. Keywork is comfortable, intonation is good. This Coleman Hawkins tenor is only the second example I have ever seen that had the modern left hand pinky / spatula key layout like a Gold Medal 1 or Rev D. The Coleman Hawkins tenors exist because Coleman Hawkins apparently didn’t have to play exclusively Selmer when he was outside the USA, and he chose to play an SML when he was in Europe for that reason. There are VERY few of these around. I buy them whenever I can, and I have only seen 7 of them ever, which is similarly rare to a Conn-O-Sax or a Buescher Straight alto etc. Like the top tier of rarity. Plus they play exceptionally well, so it makes it an all around great deal. This one had a good overhaul done in Germany before I got it (from a pro player who plays SMLs and was willing to trade this to me). It had a setup done here and palys great! I think you’ll be really happy with it. It’s a fantastic addition to anyone’s collection, and it’s also tons of fun to play.
