Wow. This is one of the best Selmer altos I have played in the past few years. It is original lacquer with the only past repair being a resoldered key guard leg that popped off in cleaning (which happens a lot and is not serious). Importantly, this beautiful vintage Selmer has a full, $1500 mechanical overhaul by one of the best saxophone techs in the country – Carlo Cennamo of Cennamo Woodwinds. I have been wanting to see Carlo’s work for years now, and I finally got to on this horn. Man, I was blown away. It feels better than new mechanically. Everything is just about perfect on the entire horn – tolerances on the key fitting are like you would see on a Swiss watch! The action is really snappy and even. The firmness of the spring tension is balanced across all the different parts of the horn. Neck fit is excellent. Everything about the job makes sense, and the horn is setup now for really the next 50 years mechanically, and at least the next 8-10+ years pad wise.

As for the tone, it blew me away. This horn is more fun to play than you will believe. It is recognizably a vintage Selmer– lyrical and with a “french” core tone– big and warm like a Balanced Action and darker like an early Mark VI. But HUGE. Expansive, warm, and resonant. And the body tube is palpably alive, vibrating in your hands when you play. I try to reserve superlatives for when they are really deserved when describing saxophones, and this horn simply does deserve them. This horn is less mouthpiece picky than a new Selmer, believe it or not, and it works well with almost any chamber size. Intonation is good, and pleasantly malleable. It’s not too hard to bend notes when you want to, but it’s also an easy horn to just play on and not worry about tuning much.

If you have been looking for a fun alto that is perfectly setup to play like it should, and that is beautiful, AND a vintage Selmer, but still for not much money, well amazingly, here it is. Only one available.
