Here’s a chance to get a nice silver plated Selmer Super (Balanced) Action tenor from 1954 for less than the price of a new Reference 36, or for about 1.4x the price of a new Yamaha 82z. This horn will need some work put in though. It has been played a lot, and the pads are currently pretty leaky. You can play it down to low Bb, but don’t expect it to feel saturated and projecting at this point. Repair wise, it has had some dings removed from the back of the bow and body tube. The low C guard has been worked on and is kind of ugly in the middle. Could be replaced if you wanted. And there’s an actually cool-looking little silver decoration just past the neck cork on the neck. If you want the beautiful, warm, rich tone of a late SBA without spending a ton, this would be a great option. With a little love, it will be a beautiful horn. You could do a big playing condition job and spend maybe $400 replacing a bunch of pads, or you could just overhaul it completely all at once (probably what I would do) and then play it for the long haul without spending much more on maintenance. It’s on consignment, so I haven’t spent any money on the pads yet, but if it hangs around for a while, I’ll probably get the go ahead from the owner to do that.
Comes in a nice BAM Trekking tenor case as well. Only one available!
