This is one of those great vintage Selmer altos that makes you want to play nothing but it. It sings beautifully, with very little resistance and a bigger sound than you might expect. The tone is medium-dark with a rich core and a nice lyrical quality about it. This is what you look for in the best altos- they should sing. The tone is nice across the whole range of the instrument and will not disappoint.
Cosmetically, this horn has its original lacquer which is in great condition. The neck has been pulled down very slightly (not bad) and expertly returned to the proper angle. There was also a small dent removed from the bow at some point, and the low C keycage has one leg pushed slightly in.
Altissimo response is great, and this horn is free blowing and not resistant. Selmer was making great saxophones in the 41xxx range. This is the vintage of Coltrane’s tenor and many other of the best tenors ever made, so it is not that surprising to find such a great alto in that serial range as well.
This horn has recently received a thorough setup and cleaning by Matt Stohrer. Matt put quite a bit of time into this horn to make it the best that it can be on its current pads, which are in excellent condition. The key heights are medium-high, opening up the horn so that it can resonate better, and the feel is nice and even across the stacks. This horn should make someone very happy. Besides being beautiful, collectible, and a great investment, it is also a superb player.
