This is a beautiful one owner Selmer Reference 36 tenor saxophone that just got a GetASax ‘mini-overhaul’ and plays better than at least 95% of the Reference 36’s out there. In a mini-overhaul, the horn basically gets overhauled but you can reuse the barely-used Pisoni Pro italian leather pads that the horn comes with. You have to take them all out, add adhesive, reseat them all. This gives you a nice, firm, reliable pad seat that will last for many years to come. Then you completely re-setup the horn with correct key heights and redo all necessary adjustment materials, check neck fit, and check everything else to put it into perfect playing condition. The horn ends up (obviously) better than new mechanically, at the cost of about $800 in work, and it’s well worth it. With everything fixed, these horns are a dream to play! That’s why I bother to get all the work done on them. If you want a modern Selmer that plays with a beautiful, rich, warm tone, has great intonation, and very comfortable modern keywork, then the Reference 36 is probably your best option. The Supreme is more expensive, and has more of an in-your-face late Mark VI style tone, where the Ref 36 is warmer and more spread, harkening back to the SBA. And the Supreme also needs the $800 mini-overhaul out of the box! This Reference 36 was bought new and not played very much by the original owner, so it still looks almost new with only minor signs of use. It comes in the excellent BAM-made Selmer ‘Light’ case, which is great for shipping and gigging and keeps the horn very safe. One of my favorite cases. If you’re looking for a great Selmer tenor at a reasonable price that does everything well and will be easy and reliable to own, then this beautiful Reference 36 would be hard to beat.
