Beautiful Selmer Mark VI Tenor Saxophone serial 160601. The original lacquer looks almost new on this one. It was owned by a clarinet player who collected a few beautiful saxophones and put them away before selling them to GetASax very recently. The pads are also original from Elkhart on this Mark VI. They’re still sealing, and it actually plays fairly well on them. But if you’re going to play this seriously, you’re going to want to get it repadded or thoroughly setup pretty soon. The neck, as you can see in the photos, has some minor lines of lacquer missing on the sides from flexing over time. This is as minor a ‘pull down’ as you could find, and shows no signs of being currently pulled down or of past repairs. It’s just the way the old nitrocellulose lacquer fractures when it is flexed over time. Virtually ever modern Selmer neck would look like this if they still used that type of lacquer. Only other thing worth mentioning is the rib under the top stack post is slightly separated from the tube on one edge. It’s about 90% still soldered down, but the edge is slightly up. I could get it epoxied down or try to solder it a bit, but it’s probably best to just leave it up to the buyer to decide what to do. I don’t recommend removing and resoldering, as it’s fine as is, so you could just leave or you could put a bit of epoxy under the raised edge. This was hard to photograph so I am attaching a macro photo of it below.
Tonally, this Mark VI is medium between bright and dark and pretty free blowing even with the somewhat leaky original pads. With a standard repad, it will play like new, and will be a fantastic tenor that also looks almost like a new horn. It obviously has hardly been played since it was bought and put away about 40 years ago. I’ll include a free BAM Classic tenor case which is molded to fit this horn perfectly, and is extremely safe for shipping a Selmer anywhere in the world.
