This 1962 Selmer Mark VI Tenor saxophone is relacquered, but it’s in otherwise excellent physical/mechanical and cosmetic condition. It came in with old pads, but it still had a big, dark, focused, powerful tone like you think of with the 90-100k Mark VI’s. The early 100k serial ones are identical to a late 90k, but they sell for a lower price than the ‘5-digit’ serial VI’s, so that makes this an excellent value in a VI. If you want a similar horn for less money, but with older pads, there’s currently a 104k for sale here that isn’t overhauled. This one is for the person who wants the picky, GetASax overhaul on the horn, so that it just plays great right out of the case and is ready to go for the foreseeable future, with only periodic checkups needed on the pads. The main things to think about on a relacquer are two: First of all, check for past damage. I don’t see anything significant on this one as far as past repairs. It just got a new coat of lacquer at some point. And second, to overhaul it so that any key wear from use or buffing is removed, and the keywork goes back to being all tight and snappy. That’s what’s happening with the overhaul. So it’s a good buy for someone who wants the tone of the late 5-digit tenors, but double discounted because of the early 6 digit serial and the new coat of lacquer. This is getting overhauled with nice Pisoni Italian leather pads and premium reusable slightly domed brass resonators. In my opinion, there’s no better way to do it!
