This is a nice original lacquer Selmer Mark VI alto from 1956. It has no dents or dings. The pads are medium way through their usable life – not a fresh overhaul but not super old either. It plays pretty well on them, but would be better with some additional pad work put in. I’m trying to price it as low as possible, but if it doesn’t sell soon I’ll spend some more money on it and raise the price a bit. You almost never find a nice 1956 original lacquer VI alto for this kind of price. I’m pricing it low for quick sale. These altos play with a poweful, focused, medium dark tone that is really special. Quite different from either an SBA (which is more spread and much less powerful) or from a later VI alto (which tends to get a lot brighter and have also a little less focus). Some (probably at least 25%) of the fragile Euro lacquer will come off the next time this horn is disassembled, washed, and overhauled. That’s because it’s already flaky in places. But that won’t hurt the horn. It will be just fine and will develop a cool patina in those areas.
