This is an absolute cannon of an early 5-digit Selmer Mark VI alto. The 1955-56 altos have way more power than the 1954 or 1957 altos for some reason, and they typically have a very strong, focused core tone that is both dark and powerful. It’s more of a cannon than any other serial of Selmer alto, including modern. If you want power without sacrificing the dark core tone, then this is the VI to get. This particular one has a mix of pads, mostly older, and ideally could be overhauled, as it has been sitting for a while. It was owned by someone meticulous, as there is only lacquer wear at the touch points, where you have to handle it on the neck to put mouthpiece on etc. There have been a few small dents removed over the years (just look for a few spots where there’s lacquer loss in a little circle shape). Besides that, the neck hasn’t been pulled down, and I see no signs of serious past damage at all. The original neck has the matching serial to the body, and is in great shape. I don’t think you’re likely to find a nicer Mark VI to grab and overhaul if you want a truly world class Mark VI with maxed out power and a basically dark tone. These are really hard to put down when overhauled.
