This is a beautiful relacquered Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone with rose gold colored lacquer and a recent repad. It plays well with a medium-bright tone and a nice even scale cross the range. This horn has good intonation across the range as well, unlike some earlier VI altos with a different bow design. (This is the good bow version.)
This horn has a recent repad, and it plays great. No need to plan on additional pad work – this baby is good to go for a long time right out of the case. There just is no other saxophone that does it all as well as a vintage VI like this, and this is a beautiful example of one for a very reasonable price. No past damage or repairs on this horn that I see. The price is lower than others, solely because it has had a new coat of paint. Because this was such a clean and beautiful example, I had the engraving restored by Sherry Huntley of Artistic Engraving. Sherry is a former Selmer engraver, and her work is indistinguishable from factory engraving. It adds value and really makes the horn look great. I can send you a “before” photo of the engraving if you’re interested – she basically re-cut the original cuts exactly, so it’s a true restoration.
You will not lose money if you ever want to re-sell a horn like this. Modern Selmers have gotten so expensive relative to vintage ones that you can now buy a great VI like this for quite a bit less than a new “Reference 54,” only your Ref54 goes down in value and your VI goes up, and the VI is (in my opinion) still a superior instrument in terms of tone and build quality.
Talk to me about adding a BAM case for safety/protection/gigging, at a great package price. The current case is fine, but it’s boxy and rather heavy if you’re going to be packing this around. I love BAM cases for keeping your VI in good shape and carrying it around in style.
This is an easy, turn-key purchase for a beautiful Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone!
