There are not too many original lacquer Selmer Balanced Action’s out there anymore. Here is a structurally clean, original lacquer alto SN# 269xx, which is the best serial range for a Balanced Action, in my experience. It has American engraving, with a beautiful cabin scene engraved on the bell. The BA tenors have gone up a lot in price in recent years, and the altos are almost sure to follow. This is what Paul Desmond played on the classic “Take Five” with an MC Gregory mouthpiece (BA + MC Gregory @small tip opening + stiff reed + lots of practice + play softly = Desmond sound!) I love the warm, sweet tone that these altos have. I play a very similar 26xxx myself, and recommend this one highly. This horn is on consignment from an experienced, long-time saxophone collector, and he is only selling it because after over 20 years of collecting, he is now selling most of his collection.
This horn is structurally clean, without any evidence of past damage to the body or to the neck. The neck has not been pulled down. There also don’t appear to be any past repairs on this horn. There is only some moderate play wear on the back of the body, which is no big deal. The pads are a mix of older and newer, and the horn plays pretty well as is, and would play better with a repad sometime in the next few years. Again, it is clear that this is an outstanding alto that has great potential for any player who wants a vintage Selmer tone.
Ergonomics and intonation are good. This is a solid alto that will give you a more lyrical sound than you can get on modern horns, and has the modern design that made Selmer Paris famous. This horn is currently in an old Conn case, but if you are having it shipped far, I’d recommend getting a more form-fitting case, and I can discuss some options with you if you like.
