This is a real rarity and a great player as well, and beautiful too! And it has history. This is an extremely rare silver Committee II Martin. The Comm. 2 was going to be Martin’s pro tenor, until they got into legal troubles with a company that owned one of the patents relating to the design. So this pro horn was only made for just over three years, and they are all right around 132xxx-144xxx. That means there are only a few of these around compared to almost any other horn of this caliber. And how many are silver plated? This is the only one I have ever seen or heard of.
It was made during WWII for the US military, and it looks like it didn’t get used much in the war, or else its owner took excellent care of it. Almost all of the original silver plate is intact. The horn has no dents and only the most minor of dings in a few places, and one leg of the low C guard is missing, but barely noticeable.
It has a fresh overhaul done by Matt Stohrer, who is one of the best in the business. He specializes in rare horns, and he made sure that this tenor was playing its best before he let it go. It has perfectly balanced spring tension, the pads feel great, and you can of course whisper down to low Bb effortlessly. This horn needs a good player to tame it, because with a modern mouthpiece, the octaves are pretty spread. However, if you have a good ear, you can make the horn respond.
The tone is great. Big, powerful, rich, lush, fat palm key tone. It ships in the original case which is in fine condition.
