This is as good as it gets in a vintage Keilwerth saxophone. This rare original silver Tone King Special was Keilwerth’s first really top quality horn, and this is the earliest example of one that I have had. It just got a complete overhaul and plays AMAZINGLY. Nothing plays like a Keilwerth. These early ones are like a Conn 10M + a Selmer SBA. Big fat upper register like a Conn, and a dark tone, but with a focused core like a Selmer, and modern keywork!. I had Ernie Watts in the shop not too long ago, and he sounded like Coltrane on his Keilwerth + FL Link 13* metal! A lot of that is style, of course, (Ernie is a legend) but the SBA sort of tone is in there. What an outstanding tenor! This is also the version that morphed into the Couf Superba 1 with some slight changes (smaller bell etc.) The Tone King Special / Superba 1 is one of the best all-around tenors in my opinion. Vintage tone, modern keywork, great build quality. The overhaul on this horn is top quality. It feels better than new under the fingers, and it has all the little touches completed that take a horn from good to great. (Thorough neck fit, correct adjustment materials, thorough cleaning, correct pad heights, pad feel, hand polish).
Only one available!
While I’m at it, I should mention, we are working on the Keilwerth interior for the new Walt Johnson cases, so Keilwerths will once again have a top quality case option available.
