This unusual Conn alto appears to be a later transitional 6M, but it is stamped 206xxxAX. I have been told by a couple of different Conn Conn experts that the X in a serial number probably means experimental. If that is true, then it would mean that Conn continued producing the popular New Wonder II model for quite a while after they had developed the 6M. For more information on transitional Conn saxophones, see this great article by Matt Stohrer:
Some other people think that the X means that it was a mis-stamped saxophone, which could mean that this is a 260xxx alto (which would make a whole lot more sense with the features that it has). If it’s just a really nice late transitional alto, then that’s not so bad – that would be the best sounding Conn alto ever made in my opinion.
As a collector’s item, something like this is cool to have. As a saxophone to play, it is hard to beat the sound of a transitional Conn alto in any case. Does anybody else out there whom I haven’t already talked to have an experimental Conn? If so, let me know! For you collectors out there, this is a rare opportunity to buy a collectible horn that I have been holding onto for some time now.
