This… (Doug Demuro voice)… is a vintage Conn 4M curved soprano with art deco engraving and original silver plate. You rarely see ‘later’ Conn curved sopranos like this come up for sale. The serial is 220k but the engraving matches up to 1930-31 Conn build, which is when this would have been put together and sold. I have only seen a handful of curved sopranos later than this, and i have never noticed any design changes after this version, except that the very late ones have the ‘naked lady’ / Conn 6M / Conn ‘Artist’ style engraving, where this one has the art deco style engraving from 1931 or so.
This beautiful soprano also has a full overhaul done by Music Medic in Wilmington, NC. It plays well, and feels good under the fingers. The MM overhaul is extremely expensive, and the owner of this consigned soprano isn’t going to get all that money back on the sale in added value, which is good news for you, the buyer. This wasn’t played very much after being overhauled, and the pads are still in nearly new condition. The one cosmetic issue is the Eb guard, which isn’t original. A matching, original style guard could be fabricated and matched to the horn pretty easily, so if you want to do that, you can discuss that with me. I’ve done it before on other horns, but I can’t on this one since it’s consignment. It also has a strap hook balancer installed, that makes the instrument hang in a more balanced way, but that’s easily removable if you want. This also comes with both the original Conn case, and a custom-made wheeled case with custom formed foam with fabric over it inside to keep this saxophone ultra safe. The new case is heavy, but it is very protective, and I’m happy that it’s here to make shipping so easy.
I have only seen about five later Conn curved sopranos for sale ever, which makes them as rare as the 14M bass. This is priced low I think, for what it is. If you just want any old curved soprano, rather than a rare and collectible one, check out the Yanagisawa I have for sale that is priced super low and also plays great. But if you want one of the most collectible vintage Conn sopranos, that also has a BIG, warm, fat, velvety tone and is lots of fun to play, then you should definitely get this, because I have no idea when I might get another one in, and this also already has the overhaul done and included in the price.
