Description
This is a solid vintage Conn transitional tenor from the prime vintage for these horns. The Conn transitional tenors have a HUGE tone that is really hard to beat. I had a 247k tenor just like this but with different finish a couple of years ago that was just incredible. They are called transitional because they show features of the earlier New Wonder II, and features of the following, 10M “Artist” tenors. This would have been sold by Conn without any lacquer, and so this horn has been lacquered after the fact. It doesn’t show signs of heavy buffing, and this is probably this horn’s first coat of lacquer still remaining.
The only past repair that is evident is low Eb key guard that popped off and got resoldered, which is not at all a big deal. It got the bell/body brace resoldered, and a dent removed from the back of the bow. It now even still plays quite well on its old – maybe even original – pads. Plan on a repad, as these pads may be 80 years old. But it plays plenty well now, and you can tell that it’s a BIG wide, spread wonderful tenor sax.
This one is from an especially good serial range which is seldom seen for sale. There’s only one available.
