This is a beautiful Conn New Wonder I tenor SN# 144580 that is only 136 serial numbers after Lester Young’s tenor (SN#144444). That means that it was probably made within a week of Prez’s most famous (gold-plated) horn, which is one of the most important horns in the history of jazz. (Not every website has the correct info on this, and some pictures show Young playing a cheaper, lacquered Conn or a Dolnet, or have the wrong serial number listed, but the above information is accurate and matches the pictures of horn/SN# available online.)
The sound is quite similar if you use either a very vintage Link with a small tip opening, or a Brilhart (but I like it best with the Link). This horn is in excellent condition with no dents or dings on the horn or the neck. The whole thing is super-clean with only some minor wear to the silver plating in a few places. If you’re looking for a great-sounding tenor for big band or jazz, or if you’re looking for a really collectible vintage tenor, this could be the horn for you.
