This is a beautiful original silver plate Conn F Mezzo Soprano saxophone in excellent condition. It has almost all of its original satin silver finish. There are no dents or dings. There are two past repairs that I can see – one is the neck receiver, which can be cleaned up to make that resolder invisible (these just come off in your hand sometimes, and need the solder to be refreshed around now, as it’s a high wear point that is also now almost 100 years old). The other repair is that the neck got shortened under the cork by someone trying to make it tune better on probably an alto sax mouthpiece, so I had the neck restored to original spec by Aaron Barnard, using the dimensions of unmodified F mezzo necks. It now plays perfectly in tune using an actual F mezzo mouthpiece, like the GS New York F mezzo (available $350 by special request by itself, or included for free with the horn), or an original Conn piece (which plays dark and tubby, but does tune nicely). The rest of the horn is near pristine, so it’s about as nice an F mezzo as you are likely to find anywhere for sale. The case is also in nice shape. Nothing else sounds like an F Mezzo. It’s literally the lost member of the saxophone family that only a few people who are hip to them will ever get to experience. I personally think it’s one of the best sounding vintage saxophones bar-none. The tone is like a tenor squeezed into a mezzo-soprano sized body, with tons of power and a sultry, warm voice all its own. You almost never see a nice F Mezzo for sale, and the price of this one is very fair for what you get. There are hardly any of them that still exist, and many of those that do are refinished or in poor condition.
