Are you looking for a soprano tone that sounds more like an alto, or even a tenor in its warmth and fatness? That would be the #1 reason to look at a gorgeous old Conn like this. These horns are beasts! Prices vary according to rarity of finish and serial number, but amazingly, NOT according to playability. And that makes this one a great deal. It has everything going for it:
Keyed to high F;
Basically mint condition cosmetically and mechanically, which is unheard-of in the normal, everyday world of buying vintage saxophones;
Super resonant New Wonder 1 bore which has a HUGE tone not seen in modern sopranos
Durable nickel plate looks like chrome when polished, and takes decades to tarnish.
And all for less than a new boutique, asian-made soprano! Seriously folks, if you are used to thinking of Conn as low quality because you are mostly familiar with Conns built in Mexico in the 60’s, it is time to realize that the 20’s-40’s Conns are (some of?) the best-built saxophones ever.
This horn has a really big, warm, resonant tone. People will really notice your soprano tone for being so full and room-filling. These are LOUD horns. They like large chamber mouthpieces, but those are easy to find in both vintage and modern versions, and I’m happy to help you pick a good one. They have flexible intonation, so plan on using your ear – they are in tune, but they will go where you lead, so you have to already be able to use your ear before playing this. For most people reading this, that’s perfectly fine. This horn has a recent repad, so the pads are very good – nearly new – and it is ready to go right out of the cool old original case. It really is hard to beat the tone you get from one of these, so if you happen to need a loud, warm soprano sound for your playing situation, this is a great choice to consider.
