This is an original lacquer Conn 6M VIII alto saxophone with about 90% original lacquer. It is in very good physical condition, and the only past repair is a minor pull down of the neck that was expertly repaired by Aaron Barnard, who is probably the best in the world at this repair. (Also there’s a small dent on the back of the bow in the pics that has now been removed.)
The 6M VIII is the most desirable version of the 6M, and the early ones like this tend to have the best reputations. The sound is like nothing else – full, warm, lyrical, fairly focused, with a delicate core. The keywork is super-fast, intonation is very good. These are really world-class altos that deserve the hype that they get. The pads are a mix of older and newer at present and the horn is in fair-t0-moderately-good playing condition. If I were going to play it, I’d want to get it repadded.
