Description
This is a beautiful, gold-plated, fully engraved Conn 30M Connqueror tenor. This is the most deluxe model that Conn produced, and this is the most elaborate example of one that I have seen. This horn has been played a lot, and the gold plate and engraving is aftermarket, so even though it’s gold and it’s beautiful, I’m pricing it lower than an original lacquer 30M typically sells for. This is to give you some room to get this horn freshly overhauled, as it has been played a lot on current pads and is going to need a good mechanical overhaul by someone like Carlo Cennamo or Jack Finucane, or a similarly detail-oriented saxophone tech. 30M’s have more parts and take more attention to overhaul than other saxophones, and this one will need the keys swedged also, because of extensive use. I try to just put it to you straight in descriptions so that you know what you are getting and can be pleasantly surprised if it is a little better than described. So that’s what this is – original engraving buffed off, extensively re-engraved, gold plated. You can see a reinforcing patch by the thumb hook and by the bow guard. This horn has all its bits and bobs that you would expect with a Conn 30M, and the original neck looks good as well. Just the gold plating represents around $3500 of added value, plus at least $500-1000 for the extensive engraving.
30M’s are some of the best playing and most fun tenors ever. I play one myself and love it. The tone is like a 10M – big, warm, medium-focused for a Conn, but wider than most modern horns, works with most mouthpieces. Conns are now fully back in style, as players realize what a great sound they have, that can be found nowhere else.
The original owner of this horn, Al Epstein, was a go-to tenor sideman, and played this horn with Benny Goodman, Stan Getz, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Ventura, and many others over the course of his long career.
If you’re looking for a Conn 30M Connqueror, and and you want to play a deluxe version of one of the best tenors ever, this is the horn for you. The price is not flexible, but I’m open to trades for something similarly cool.
