Description
This is a superb pre-war Conn 10M tenor sax overhauled by Matt Stohrer. This horn is so great that I have been holding it back in my personal collection for about a year. It is super clean, and came to me with original pads. It had a total, top-shelf overhaul done by Matt, who has about a two year wait list for an overhaul at present. His attention to detail and knowledge of vintage instruments is hard to beat. It has a $120 set of TenorMadness hand-made reusable slightly domed brass resonators. This horn is of course original lacquer, and it’s from the very beginning of the 10M run, well before World War II. The pads feel dry and snappy, and “sing” when you close them going down the horn. The keywork and ergonomics on a 10M makes for comfortable playing. It only takes folks a few weeks to get used to the new placement and get back up to full speed, and some aspects of the keywork are faster than any modern horn.
The tone is, of course, the reason why the Conn 10M tenor has gotten so popular. Nothing else sounds even close to one of these that has had a good overhaul and is playing its best. This thing is wide and medium dark tonally – totally saturated even at low volumes and throughout the register. And it will go as loud as you want it to as well. I have friends and past customers who use the Conn 10M tenor for everything from R&B to Rock and commercial music, though of course it is a natural fit for jazz of all kinds. The sound on a 10M tenor is a little more focused than earlier Conns (like the New Wonder 1 and 2). The intonation is also more slotted in than an earlier Conn, not that those are bad either.
This is one of the good ones folks. If you don’t love it, I do take returns for any reason, but this is a keeper. Don’t let your friends play it. It will ruin their day.
