The S-1 was Buffet’s most innovative and deluxe design for a saxophone. This horn is SN# 23xxx and comes from the 1975 or so. It has its original lacquer with only modest wear, mostly around the upper stack keys. This horn has older pads that are sealing well, so it plays well as is. You should plan on getting it repadded within 3 years or so I would guess. It has a medium bright, round tone with that “vintage” element in it – a kind of character or complexity to the core that makes it sound better and more interesting than some modern horns.
The workmanship on this sax is particularly notable. It has a unique design on the low Eb and low C keys so that you can pivot your finger and switch without rollers. The low Bb key also shows some innovative (and comfortable) improvements. Overall, the key work is great, and the horn is easy to play fast on. There are no dents and there is no evidence of past repairs. The neck is original and clean as well.
An S1 in this kind of condition does not come up for sale very often, so now is your chance to get one, and for the price of a used Yamaha, there should be nothing to hold you back. It will certainly go up in value while you enjoy playing it.
