But as a modern horn, it hasn't seen decades of playing and repairs. It also comes with a good setup done by Ishimori pre-sale. The Ishimori New Vintage tenors hold up extremely well over time, and every detail of construction and assembly is optimized for ease of play. The tone on this Ishimori tenor is meant to remind you of a vintage Selmer - to my ear, it plays like a late SBA - not as loud and wide open as some Mark VI's, but more focused than earlier Selmers also. The neck and the engraving are meant to evoke the Selmer Super Balanced Action, so I suspect that the neck is an SBA bore. The tuning is excellent. This version without the high F# has a special neck to make the horn tune well without that tone hole. The finish is a stable patina applied to the bare brass. While it will continue to change in appearance somewhat, it will basically look like this. You get the bare brass finish plus a great unique look to the horn that ages well - much nicer than the completely shiny unlacquered finish that Yamaha does. It's priced amazingly well for what you get, which is a saxophone of better build and setup than just about anything on the market. The reliability also really helps down the road because this will be an easy saxophone to own as you play it a lot and need small pad adjustments in years to come. It's easy to work on, hard to break, and generally just precision-built and extremely satisfying to own and play. Intonation is great, ergonomics is great, and the tone is beautiful, medium bright, and rich- easy to take in any direction depending upon your choice of mouthpiece. If you're trying to decide on a mid-priced but top-quality new tenor saxophone, your choices are this or the Yamaha 62III. I think this Yanagisawa is the better value, because the 62 tends to depreciate more, and it has a bit clearer tone with a little less richness. It's still a great horn and fun to play, but the Yanagisawa has lower depreciation over time, and is built to really the highest standards in saxophone manufacturing, despite being relatively affordable (for a pro saxophone). I think I have the best price on it as well, not even figuring in the setup (see below).

This horn got a new horn checkup after arriving at the GetASax shop. Having a world class repairman take a look at a new saxophone fresh from the factory can often take it from good to great. There are typically 2 or 3 small tweaks that need done, and presto – you get the full experience of what the horn can do. Besides the excellent price, that’s a real selling point, I think. That's not a big surprise, as Freddie did not make that many of them, and the ones he did make are mostly still in the hands of their original owners. The few that have come up for sale over the last 5 years that I've seen have been priced way out of the reach of most players-- typically $2400-$4000-- for a mouthpiece! And sadly, since Freddie died nine years ago, no more of these are available.

Freddie is known both for refacing and for making his own mouthpieces. They all have a good amount of projection, but the Mark I is darkest and the Mark IV is brightest. We may copy my favorite Mark IV someday as well, but I wanted to start with the Mark II because it's bright and projecting but not too bright, and it seems to be one of the most popular ones of these. Bob Mintzer played one of these for a long time, and may still from time to time. I know he has a lot of Freddie's pieces. Jeff Coffin plays an unusual early model by Freddie that isn't any of the Mark I-IV's, but which sounds pretty similar to the Mark II that we copied for this project (Jeff was kind enough to make several audio comparison samples of the GS Mark II and his Freddie piece, and they are definitely more similar than different.) They're also not that similar to other common mouthpieces like Meyer, Dukoff, or Berg Larsen. It's different from any model of Otto Link, and is not a redesigned Link chamber at all. The baffle curves from nearly flat at the tip rail, into the chamber in a smooth curve, and the throat opens out into a medium-large chamber. Chamber volume is similar to a metal Otto Link, so it tunes great on basically any saxophone. The shank is long enough that you can pull out on a Conn 10M or something that wants a large mouthpiece volume, and it works well. The side walls start out nearly straight and are more scooped as it moves into the chamber. The magic in these pieces is in the baffle, and we spent a long time getting that just right.

Tonally, my best attempt at a verbal description would be to say that this has a more projecting tone than a GS Slant or a vintage Otto Link, but it kind of opens out and gets wider and more robust as you push it. Some mouthpieces get more shrill the more air you put into them. The GS Mark II gets more lush and almost 'operatic' as you push it. It's really fun to play. If you want something different from a Link style tenor mouthpiece, and you want a piece that is brighter but not too bright, and that has plenty of power and projection when pushed without getting thin and shrill, that's what the GS Mark II really does well.

Facing Information:

Freddie's facing curves are usually about .001" more open than the equivalent Otto Link, so we are reproducing his curves on the GS Mark II. The original that we copied was a 7 measuring .101" and I also have a 7* and 8 that we used for the .106" 7* and the .111" 8 tip. As an interesting side note, most Freddie 8's are actually stamped 7**, but I think that's probably because he had them stamped 7* and then would just add another star for an 8. I've seen that enough times now to think it's definitely intentional. They always seem to measure .111-.112" for me, and we settled on .111" as it's closer to what people are used to in an 8.

A word on price: People are *constantly* telling me that I should raise the prices of the GS Mouthpieces. However, they are intended to be a service to the saxophone community, so that as many players as possible can get a great mouthpiece that is entirely faced by hand and that plays as well as a much more expensive original. The GS Mark II tenor mouthpiece would probably sell almost as well at nearly double the price, but we will be keeping the price $260 as long as possible, because that's the whole point of the project.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0617/7931/2717/files/Selmer-New-Large-Bore-Tenor-Silver-8576-16-scaled.jpg?v=1740410540
gs-supersonic-tenor-50s-dukoff-bright-projecting-funky
GS Supersonic Tenor 50's Dukoff - Bright, Projecting, Funky

Bright, projecting, funky vintage 1950’s Dukoff copy that is like an Early Babbitt Link but more fun and better sounding. The 7 CV and the regular 7 both have the same facing (.101″). Just the CV mouthpiece itself (not facing) is about 1/2″ shorter on the shank end. If you play a GS Slant, Mark II, or Reso, the 6 (.090″), 7* (.105″), 8 (.110″) and 9 (.120″) facings will be almost identical and will feel very familiar. The 7 facing is a little different since it copies the CV Special, but it is actually very similar to my regular 7 facing as well.

Long answer:
You can get a precise copy of the original piece by selecting the 7 CV version which is a shorter mouthpiece and has Charlie Ventura’s favorite 7 facing. The Dukoff Supersonic is a pretty short mouthpiece (in overall length) compared to most other hard rubber tenor pieces. On all of the other versions we offer besides CV Special, the mouthpiece you get will be longer than the original. We found that the piece plays the best if we match the overall mouthpiece length of a metal Zimberoff Dukoff / Dukoff Hollywood, which makes the mouthpiece tune well on modern horns like Yamaha, even if you have a very firm embouchure. Price wise, these are only going up in price, and GetASax has them priced the lowest of anywhere in the country I am pretty sure. The FG SPECIAL 7* facing is the one that is an exact copy of my Freddie Gregory refaced Reso Chamber. Believe it or not, this project actually required us to scan my TWO best Reso Chamber tenor mouthpieces in order to give you the ability to select your own tip opening. We didn't want to cut any corners, so we scanned my best original 5 tip Reso Chamber mouthpiece as well as the Freddie refaced Reso Chamber, and we modeled both of them.

When you select any tip opening other than the FG SPECIAL 7*, then you will be getting a Reso Chamber built from my original facing Reso Chamber. The reason for this is pretty easy to explain: Otto Link manufactured mouthpiece 'blanks' with a zero tip opening. Then they opened them up from a closed tip to whatever tip opening they wanted. In order to give you different tip openings authentically, we needed to do it the same way. So we started with a smaller tip Reso Chamber, and then we used Otto Link facing curves to carefully model 'opening' the 5 tip to whatever facing you want, just like if it were done on a facing machine. We also move the baffle work to the appropriate position like on a hand finished piece. This Reso Chamber mouthpiece is unbelievably good. It is just as rich and complex as the FG SPECIAL RESO, but it plays just a little brighter, and the mouthpiece itself is also a little longer (Otto Link used a couple of different molds to make the Reso Chamber model.) It's the one that Steve Neff reviews here. So if you normally have to pull out a lot to tune, or you want just a little more punch than the FG SPECIAL RESO while remaining basically dark and rich, that's what you get!

If you want an exact copy of the Reso Chamber Joe Allard Facing that we scanned, including the J.A. stamp on the table and the more rounded tip profile, then select the 5 JA facing. This is from 1956 and has a dark, powerful tone with lots of focus and projection. You save about half price on this compared to original lacquer. That new ‘coat of paint’ affects the value more than it probably should, but it can be a nice way to get a fantastic vintage of Mark VI for a lower price. This horn had an unusual repair issue – the bow was ‘split’ underneath the bow guard on the braze line (where the brass was originally brazed together from a flat sheet). I sent it to Aaron Barnard, in Cedar Rapids IA, who is probably the best in the world at this sort of repair, and he got it all brazed back together, removed a moderate bow dent, and resoldered the bow guard. The lacquer is missing in the bow area because of that, but in terms of soundness, the horn is back to original quality and dimensions in the bow. There are not many other past repairs – low C keyguard is resoldered, and there’s some scratching from a metal stand on the front lower part of the bell. This horn has older pads and plays quite well on them with a big sound and lots of projection. It will need a good overhaul soon both to replace the pads and to do the mechanical adjustments / key fitting that are needed at this point, almost 70 years into its musical life. It should be a really excellent tenor with a good overhaul, though you could certainly play it like this for a while too. Original neck is in good shape and not pulled down. Aaron does excellent work and this horn is no exception - Pisoni Italian leather pads, reusable made in USA slightly domed metal resonators, and everything is nice and tight and snappy. There is really nothing else like a Selmer Balanced Action tenor sax. This was made when Conn set the standard for saxophone tone, and Selmer goes for the Conn-like big warm, spread, velvety tone with the Radio Improved and Balanced Action tenors. This is an early BA with the individual key guards (which I love) and it feels almost like a Radio Improved tonally. But it has the keywork that changed the game and that was the huge leap forward on the Balanced Action model. All modern saxophones imitate the BA keywork style, so it's the combination of the BA tone (that becomes progressively more focused and less spread and warm over time in later Selmers) with the BA keywork that makes these early BA's so special. My personal BA tenor is one of my favorite horns ever.

This is an originally-unengraved tenor that has been relacquered, but the lacquer color looks right for Selmer USA factory relacquer, and I don't see any sign of major damage or repairs at all. I think this was played but well cared for, and then probably sometime in the 50's it got the new coat of Selmer lacquer to get it back looking its best again (which was standard practice at that time). With Aaron's overhaul, and mechanical play that it may have had after its first 90 years has been reversed, and it feels like a new horn under the fingers. The saturated pp low Bb pops out effortlessly, which is just such a pleasure.

Only one available!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0617/7931/2717/files/Selmer-Balanced-Action-Tenor-22406-17.jpg?v=1770747096
selmer-mark-vi-tenor-1969-original-lacquer-american-engraved-overhauled-164746
Selmer Mark VI Tenor 1969 Original Lacquer American Engraved Overhauled!! 164746

Here is a fantastic, freshly-overhauled Selmer Mark VI Tenor from 1969. Prices are lower than the earlier horns but quality and tone are in good supply. The tenors like this from '68 tend to be medium between bright and dark, with a colorful gorgeous core to the tone. So fun to play! Some of that comes through in the video below, even though this one has a mix of pads. It just got a pretty thorough tune up and sounds great! In the video it's doing classic mainstream jazz or you can do anything on it with a different mouthpiece and playing approach. The Mark VI is the most versatile saxophone ever made. The overhaul is low miles and feels and looks nearly fresh as the owner of this has other, darker-sounding horns that he plays. The 1967 VI's are a sweet spot for mixing power and a complex, interesting tone, both on alto and on tenor. Selmer's advertising from '67 says that it redesigned the VI in this year, and whether that's true or not, they certainly sound different. If you want a powerful VI tenor with a great overhaul that's what this is. It is straight, tight, and feels great under the fingers, but it has also had a lot of past dent work - there are lines from a dent ball on the back of the body tube in most places, as well as most of the bottom bow. I think this was just from someone kind of overdoing it with the dent ball rather than it actually having dents almost everywhere, but it is what it is. There's a minor crease that was removed from the bell flare, and a pickup plug in the side of the neck. Definitely a player's VI in actually great mechanical and playing condition with a great overhaul and a huge tone for a fraction of the cost of a new Selmer that doesn't sound as good. Condition wise, this had some minor dents removed from the bow area, and the Eb, C and chromatic F# keyguards are resoldered. It has some lacquer wear on the back of the body tube, and the lacquer is of course not original. The original neck with matching serial number had some moderate pull down corrected along with the full overhaul, and it’s at the ideal angle now.

If you want a great SBA tenor for a very fair price, and that has already been completely overhauled. It just got checked out immediately presale and comes sealing well and playing its best. It includes a BAM softpack tenor case that is form-fitted to Selmer shape and will be great for safe shipping and gigging. It is basically impossible to find a better vintage of Mark VI tenor in my opinion than the late 81k range. This horn looks almost original, as the engraving at this serial was done with a light hand originally, and the relacquer hasn't changed the look very much. It's likely a factory relacquer as well, since this looks like Selmer lacquer and everything was done very carefully with minimal buffing. I just couldn't resist giving this horn a full overhaul pre-sale. It just plays SO well, and feels great under the fingers as well - dry and snappy like a new saxophone, with effortless subtone and nice saturation. The tone is dark, focused, 'woody' and powerful, with a solid core to it. The original neck has matching serial number and has no dents or dings and no past or current pull down. Really great! There have been some normal playing sort of chair dents removed from the back of the bow and body tube, and there are no dents or dings now. I don't even see any resoldered key guard feet or any other repairs, which means this horn was played a lot because it plays well, but it was also very well cared for with minimal past repairs and no neck damage. I put it in the nice 50's Chesterfield case with original case cover. The zipper on the case is not working, but the case cover zipper does the job just as well. If you prefer it in a new BAM Classic case or something, we can do that instead. Either way, it will get to you safely. This is a superb Mark VI tenor, and I hope it will go to a player who really wants a great one.

Only one available!

Here is a vintage conn tenor so nice that it literally could not be manufactured today. Nobody engraves like this on instruments anymore and nobody offers a burnished gold finish, nor would the labor be available to do it even if you wanted it done. It's a thick layer of real gold all over the instrument, and it's pretty wild that anyone ever did this. This is a Conn New Wonder II tenor from 1929 that has my favorite engraving pattern that Conn offered - an old castle on a hill - reminds me of the part of Germany along the Rhine where such castles watched each stretch of the river. It's such a beautiful instrument, and the late New Wonder II tenors also have just about the biggest sound of any tenor ever made. My previous assistant who plays big band tenor ended up with two of these after hanging around GetASax for a few years, and he just sounds amazing on them. One was gold just like this. I'm not sure who did the overhaul, but it looks like Pisoni Italian leather pads and the TenorMadness reusable slightly domed brass resonators that I would have picked for this if I had been getting it overhauled myself for GetASax. The only flaw on this horn is the neck had been pulled down in the past. I sent it to Aaron Barnard for repair, and it will come back soon and I'll post neck photos, but it was a pretty bad pull down and will probably get annealed to un-work-harden the brass on the sides. Probably this was the result of decades of small flexing of the neck. My guess is the original owner always adjusted the mouthpiece tuning while the neck was on the horn, and it just flexed ever so slightly each time. Anyway, the repair at Aaron got this all fixed, and the neck is now ready for its next 100 years.

Only one available!

Price just reduced September 2026! This is a great deal! This is a beautiful King SilverSonic tenor from 1959 with solid silver neck and solid silver bell. The bell also has the 'gold inlay' (gold plate inside the engraving and a gold wash in the bell) that King players desire with the lust a dragon feels for its choicest treasure. This Silversonic tenor has most of its original lacquer intact, and it has all the features you want. This desirable and rare version still has the double socket silver neck but is the more modern style of keywork that starts with the series III Silversonic, so if you want a big bright projecting King tone, but you want much of the complexity of the series II and its double socket neck, BUT you also want the silversonic bell (which is ridiculously rare before 343k serial) then this is the horn for you! This one plays on a mix of pads and is sold on consignment. It is hard to exaggerate how loud and projecting these Silversonic tenors are. You just can't find a more satisfying tenor for leading a section, cutting through a loud band, or playing jazz with an expansive, unlimited tone. The upper register, though bright, is way fatter and fuller sounding than a Selmer, and works better than a VI with a projecting mouthpiece, in my opinion.

Repairs wise: It's in quite good shape, though the lacquer is of course speckly from just living in the world. Here's what I see: It had a small, insignificant dent removed from the front of the bow area, and I don't see any resolders. There's a little line of lacquer loss on the side of the solid silver neck from flexing, but it isn't pulled down and doesn't look like it's had any kind of serious pull down. Also a sizeable area of lacquer loss on the back of the bow from a dent being removed, and some scratches on the front of the bow from using a metal sax stand.

This horn had its first life playing in a great dance band in Philly and also at some of the early NASCAR races. It's ready to go and will only need regular checkup type maintenance over the long term. The 60k tenors have a powerful, focused darkness to the tone that can sound really projecting. This one sounds like mainstream jazz with a GS Slant or similar large chamber mouthpiece, but it can also really cut through with a higher baffle piece and it doesn't thin out. There are minimal past repairs - nothing that I can see. Just a new coat of lacquer at some point, and not even much buffing. It feels like a new horn under the fingers. This comes to you from a private collection and looks like it was never played after being overhauled. The lacquer is original and dark honey gold. It's unusual to see a King from 1946 in anything like this kind of condition. This one was one owner in a closet, and then got overhauled and put in the closet of a collector, and now it's being sold again to start a new life. It's almost as close as I can imagine to buying a new King, as it can't have had more than a year or two of playing time ever. There's some light scratching next to the three ring strap hook, and that's about it for cosmetic wear. The only minor issue I note on this horn is that the neck had the serial number section removed and replaced by a fresh piece of brass, making me think the neck must not be original to the horn. It's the correct neck for this vintage and plays well, and it's solid silver and shows no signs of past damage. So all in all, a clean, beautiful, powerful vintage King tenor with full pearls in exceedingly nice condition with only the neck serial missing to save you a thousand dollars or more off the price. It has extensive and elaborate hand engraving, extra features like the bumper for the octave key on the neck, and the "OFFICIAL MUSIC MAN MODEL" marking on the bell, commemorating the musical of the same name.

These Music Man models are the most desirable of the Martins, and the most rare. I prefer the Music Man's engraving style and brass keywork to the Magna's nickel. This is a beautiful example. It has almost all of its original lacquer intact, and the only past damage is a moderate neck pull down that has been repaired by Matt Stohrer. These horns are probably the most under-appreciated sleeper vintage tenors that exist, out of everything. You can get a relacquered normal Comm III for like $1k and get it overhauled, but this one is like the nicest possible version of the Martin in gorgeous original lacquer with extra engraving and features and really not that expensive either - less than a new modern tenor even including a top quality overhaul.

A big selling point of this particular tenor is that it has a fresh (was done like 7 years ago, but then put away in a large collection and barely played) full mechanical restoration done by Matt Stohrer. Matt is one of the best saxophone repairers in the world, and he has a long wait list of people wanting him to overhaul their horns. He also just checked this one over again for any leaks and gives it his blessing. If you want Matt's work, this horn lets you skip that line and get something awesome at the same time. The advantage of Matt's full mechanical restoration is that you can be sure that this saxophone plays as well as it possibly could. This is Matt's "go crazy" kind of job, where he takes more than forty hours of labor to completely restore the keywork to better than factory tolerances, so that everything is completely right, and ready to go for the next fifty years or so with just regular maintenance. Matt's detail-oriented setup also makes the horn's keywork feel light and snappy under the fingers. The left hand pinky keys particularly stand out on this horn. On most Martins they tend to feel rather stiff, but on this one they are fluid and easy. Low Bb is super responsive and easy to play in a saturated pianissimo. Many people have never played a saxophone that was actually right. This is a chance to do just that. The overhaul represents about $2k+ of added value on this horn, but you get that built into the price. Even an old pads Music Man often sells for not that much less than the asking price of this overhauled one.

Sonically, this horn is a powerhouse. It has a fat, medium dark tone that remains lush up in to the palm keys without thinning out the way most modern horns do. The low register is similarly full and saturated. Pop on a bright mouthpiece, and this thing cuts through a loud band while staying fat sounding. It plays easily in tune. Multiphonics and altissimo are no problem. It works great with a range of mouthpieces. From a fat traditional jazz tone to section work to screaming R&B and commercial music, these horns were so popular because they can do it all.

This includes the original case also in great shape. The Yamaha YTS-62-1 tenor has the same neck version as the purple logo but has some improvements to the left hand pinky table and has the Yamaha name stamped on the bell rather than silk screened on. This is one of the cleanest examples that I have ever seen of one of these. It has some tiny dings inside the bell (down inside where you can't see them unless you look way down in), and besides that it looks basically like a new saxophone. The original case is also in near mint condition. I like the older 62's the best for their warmer, more complex tone compared to the 62II which is more clear and round by contrast. It's hard to say anything bad about the YTS-62 tenors. They're probably the single most recommended tenor saxophone that teachers tell their students (youth and adult) to look for when buying a sax. That's because they do everything well (intonation, ergonomics, build quality, tone) and they also hold their value extremely well over time. If you want to buy a Yamaha YTS-62-1 and also save some money versus a new instrument, but get one that is as clean as possileb, it would be hard to find a nicer one than this.
