This is a structurally very clean example of a Buffet Super Dynaction Tenor sax. These Super Dynactions are some of the best vintage tenors that you can find, bar none. They are less well-known than some other makes, mainly because Buffet has since become known for their clarinets, and many today have forgotten that they also made top-quality saxophones for many years. This particular horn has some moderate lacquer wear to the original lacquer. Besides that, it is very clean with no evidence of past dent work and no past repairs. There are no dents or dings on the horn now, and the bell, bow, and body tube are all in great shape. The original neck also looks very clean and has not had any damage. These are the kinds of things that you look for when you’re buying a vintage horn – mechanical condition matters a lot more than lacquer wear, and lacquer wear can often be a sign that the horn is a particularly good player. This sax was owned by a picky pro-player who obviously played it for many years and took great care of it.
This horn has just all pads replaced by Matt Stohrer. It feels GREAT and plays even better. It is totally awesome. The Buffet tone is darker, bigger, and more interesting than virtually any modern horn. Compared to a vintage Selmer (everyone always asks this) the tone is fairly similar, but it has a bigger sound, a slightly different but still French core (impossible to describe) and similar ergonomics (but the RH is a bit more spread than a VI, for instance). Intonation is very good on these, as a rule. If you like modern ergonomics, you’re interested in a more vintage tone, but you don’t want to have something that’s totally different from modern, (and you don’t want to spend a ton) then the Buffet SDA is what you want to get! Seriously though, this particular horn is really very good – the earlier Buffets have a big dark sound that is similar to a 90k Mark VI, and a very resonant body. This is a really fun horn to play.
