This is a player’s original lacquer Buffet SDA alto. It has had its share of bumps and bruises – there is evidence of small dents having been removed from the back of the body on the bow and behind the lower stack. The bell flare has had a crease removed, and the neck has been pulled down and repaired. That said, all of these issues are fixed now, and the horn has a recent overhaul with all new pads, corks and felts, so it is now playing its best.
It has a big, warm French core to the tone that is nice and lyrical. It is Selmer-like, but with a bigger sound overall. It easily fills a room and can even play commerical music loudly with the right mouthpiece. Of course, these horns are known for classical, and they do that well too. This horn will literally do it all. It ships in a hard case that will protect it well. Hopefully this will be a good, vintage professional alto for someone on a budget who is looking for a good-playing horn. It should be an easy, turn key kind of purchase, because the horn is already in great playing condition and will be for many years with only regular maintenance.
