This is a nice, clean, original lacquer Buescher Big B tenor saxophone. These horns are among the best tenors ever made and were billed as an all-purpose alternative to the ‘jazzier’ 400 line. These are excellent, professional tenors that are highly prized for their big complex tone, good build quality, excellent intonation, and all around satisfying playing experience. Besides some light lacquer wear, the only issue to mention is that the neck has been pulled down and then restored to the correct angle. This is pretty minor and also very common on vintage saxophones.
With a mix of mostly older and a few newer pads, it plays well enough that you could play it as is for a while and either get it repadded soon, or have several pads replaced at regular intervals over the next few years. It still has the snap in pads intact and it has Norton springs as well.
It can be hard to find a clean example of a Big B tenor these days. Most of them have been around the block too many times. This one has been played very little – the wear to the lacquer is not from being played – just from time and oxidation inside the case. The pearls are still sharp, the keywork is not worn – this is about as close to an original condition Big B as you will find.
