Description
Lots of good deals on the site right now, not least this wonderful VI alto in very clean, original condition priced extremely reasonably. When people come to me looking for a very good playing Mark VI for the best possible price, I always direct them to this vintage of alto. These later 60’s VI altos will definitely go up in value in coming years, as the market comes to appreciate that they are the best all-around playing VI altos. They tune the best, they have a beautiful tone, and the build quality is every bit as good as the earlier ones. They’re among the best all-around altos ever made, but they are also very affordable, and can be found lower than many new professional horns! It’s kind of crazy. Get one now while they are still gettable.
This alto is in very good condition. The neck, body tube, and bell are all in excellent condition, and the only repairs are a dent removed and key cage resoldered by the bottom bow guard, which are not serious. An advantage of this horn for many players is that it has a high F#, which was an optional extra on the Mark VI. To me the high F# is entirely an advantage on a later VI alto like this. It is above all on earlier VI tenors that some players prefer it without. The F# (And the excellent intonation on this alto) lets you play classical repertoire better than on most other vintage Selmers. The pads on this horn are older but sealing well, so you can play it as-is no problem. It has just gotten a thorough tune up also. It plays great with a rich, medium-bright tone. It’s warm, free blowing, and responsive. This is the sort of alto that people think of when they are looking for a good Mark VI.
It’s a great time to buy a Mark VI alto like this. The price is super, the condition is great, and the value will continue to increase. It includes a modern contoured case also.
