The “The Martin Tenor” is the top model tenor that the Martin Band Instrument Company made. The Martin Company was so sure of its workmanship that its horns came with a 50 year warranty! That means that this horn was, amazingly, just reaching the end of its warranty period in 2005! The Serial range is 192xxx or 1955. This tenor just received a full restoration, including additional touch up of extra silver to the keys where it had begun to show some wear. The low Eb key guard is also resoldered, though it is hard to tell. The original neck has the matching serial number. The bell engraving is really nice – some of the best engraving of any vintage saxophone. The tone on these horns is very hard to beat.
This is a RARE silver example, and it will easily go up a lot in value even over just the next five years. It has a big powerful tone and with an aggressive mouthpiece, this is the ultimate R&B and rock tenor. Or with a mellower mouthpiece, it’s perfect for jazz (Think Tex Benake with his Brilhart.) The pads on this horn are new, from the freshly done restoration. I would rate the pad work as pretty good, but not great. It certainly plays well, (all the pads are new, and all seal etc.) but the feel under the fingers is not as snappy as some Martins I have had the pleasure of playing.
The price is somewhat flexible, and trades are possible. This was a labor of love restoring a rare vintage American tenor. I’m losing money on it at this price, which is bad for me, but good for you in terms of what you get for the price. It ships in the original Martin Orange leather case, and we can discuss adding a modern case for extra protection in shipping.
