Description
This is a Conn New Wonder II soprano saxophone from ca. 1925 that is in good condition with a nice original case as well. This horn has had several lower stack posts resoldered at some point, along with the bumper for the D palm key and the octave pip. The plating looks good, with some silver showing through in a few places (see many pictures below). The pads are medium-old and the horn plays pretty well as-is. The pads have the correct conn flat metal rivet resonators on them.
People buy these 80-90 year-old sopranos for one reason above all: they have the warmest, fattest sound that you can get on soprano while also having relatively good intonation. The intonation is both good and also fairly flexible, so if a particular note isn’t quite there, you can easily make the necessary adjustment. Ergonomics are decidedly not modern, but if you love the tone, then the keywork becomes easy and second-nature in a few weeks of playing. Just as a side note, this horn works best with a large, round-chambered mouthpiece.
