Description
The Couf Superba 1 Alto is a professional horn in every way. It was the pinnacle of vintage saxophone design by the Keilwerth company, and it was the best vintage saxophone made in Germany. It has a big, rich tone with a lot of complexity, and lots of power. The tenors play like an SBA with a little more boldness, and the altos are like a darker Mark VI with a more lush low register and fuller, less reedy palm keys. Seriously.
This horn is in very good cosmetic condition with most of its honey gold original lacquer intact. The pads are sealing well and have just been tuned up pre-sale. It’s ready to go and needs nothing. It includes in the price a new ProTec XL alto case that fits the horn really well.
These horns are built to last, with rolled tone holes that give you much longer pad life (the rounded edge is softer on the pad). The large pearl key touches should be on every saxophone. Intonation is good and ergonomics feel like a modern horn.
This is the hard-to-find earlier and more desirable version of the Superba 1 that has the “in line” high F# key next to chromatic F#. The Couf saxophones were made in collaboration with saxophone teacher / player / aficionado Herb Couf who has a thriving music business based out of Detroit. I am a big fan of Couf’s taste in saxophones, and I have a matched set of gold plated Superba 1’s in my personal collection that I love to play.
If you want a great sounding, do-it-all alto that doesn’t sound exactly like everything else, but has some warmth, plenty of power, and that is built to last, the Couf Superba 1 alto may be the horn for you. I recommend it highly!
