Description
This Conn New Wonder 1 tenor combines beauty, tone, and a high-quality overhaul to give you the best horn available. This horn is a case of “They don’t make them like they used to.” NOBODY burnishes gold to finish musical instruments anymore. It’s too expensive, too much gold is involved, it’s too labor-intensive, not happening.
This is a finish that lasts forever. The gold in King Tut’s tomb was still shiny after thousands of years. This horn will be too. It’s built with the long view in mind. One of Conn’s master engravers spent hours carefully finishing the artwork on the bell as well, probably inspired by Greek mythology.
This horn also got an overhaul to last a long time, done by Emilio Lyons, affectionately known as Dr. Sax around the Boston area, where he has presided over a saxophone repair shop for decades. Emilio knows how to work with Conn’s rolled tone holes, and the work feels “Dry” and snappy under the fingers, and the horn responds easily. The pads are water proof and will last many times as long as untreated pads, so it’s a great value on a dependable sax. It was just tuned up by Matt Stohrer again pre-sale also, so this is ready to go.
This horn has an unusual factory feature on the neck tenon – Conn machined a little slot for a cork insert, to ensure neck air seal, like on a clarinet! I had Matt Stohrer re-do the cork on this neck tenon so that it is as nice as possible.
Tonally, there is probably not a saxophone with a bigger, wider, more room-filling tone than a Conn New Wonder 1. It is really wild and so fun to play. The body tube comes alive and vibrates in your hands, and the whole horn just resonates. People play these horns for the tone. The beauty and workmanship is a big bonus, but the tone is the reason. Nothing made today sounds remotely like this.
