Well, if you read the short description above, then you already know what I think about the Zephyr Special. It’s among the best-sounding altos ever made, with a sweet, lively, tone that is just gorgeous.
If you have been looking for a top-quality Zephyr Special alto for a while, it would be hard to do better than this one. And the price is quite low for what you get. Pads are mostly original to the horn, which is amazing! You can mostly experience the original factory setup from King, and then get it overhauled by someone who will reproduce this great feel. It looks like a dent was removed from the back of the bow a long time ago, leaving the lacquer looking slightly cloudy there. But it was done well, so that it’s hard to tell. Same thing by the post for side Bb. That pink color on the neck is the original lacquer, which you rarely see still intact on the silver neck. (Someone compulsive always polishes it off!) It adds value that it is still there. I have seldom seen one with this much lacquer.
The original case is in good shape as well, and the horn has its double socket end plug intact as well. If you have any questions about the horn, send them along, and I’ll do my best. Whoever gets this will be very pleased, I think. I would keep it myself, but I have one that is identical to this already.
