Description

Conn tenors are starting to get the recognition that they deserve these days. I see  more and more pro players swapping out their Selmers and modern Selmer-copies for Conns like this one. The reason is the tone. I have described it many times on this site with adjectives such as “huge, warm, lush, full, dark” etc. This one is a classic example of that. And compared to your average Conn tenor, this one is a little sweeter and a little smoother than most. Think Lester Young kind of sweetness. It’s great.

Condition wise, what we have here is a very good condition, rare gold-plated example that still has almost all of its original gold plate intact. It has a little bit of extra metal soldered to the spot just inside the lower thumb hook. The previous owner had this done to make it more comfortable to rest your thumb. It is not covering up any kind of extensive wear to the body, but it is covering what looks like a hole where a pickup was installed. All sealed up nicely now.

The other notable improvement that you can see is the double arm stabilizing mechanism that Phil Noy added to the low Eb and low C key arms (And resoldered the low C post there. This is a feature you find on modern horns sometimes, and it improves the stiffness of these keys so that they seal consistently well. The strap hook is also resoldered, as is the neck octave post, which are both common repairs and not serious.

Phil Noy did the overhaul on this horn with black RooPads and nice, slightly domed metal resonators, and it plays great – super easy and responsive throughout, and the pads feel nice and snappy under the fingers. With everything just restored, this horn is good to go for many years with only routine upkeep.

This includes the pictured Hiscox tenor case, which will keep the horn safe in style.

With the premium overhaul, this is a super deal on a gold plated Conn tenor that won’t let you down.

We pay the best prices for great saxophones.
