Buffet Super Dynaction saxophones are among the best vintage saxophones made. The do almost everything well. Great tone, like a vintage Selmer, but bigger and wider; excellent intonation; comfortable nearly-modern keywork; even scale; excellent build quality. And they are not too expensive. The early serial number ones like this are darker and richer sounding. This is the version to get if you can find one and want that darker tone.
This horn is nice original lacquer example that also has a fresh, full overhaul. This site is about quality, and I think it’s worth it to get the highest quality work I can find done on nice horns like this. The overhaul included disassembly, cleaning, new oil, all new pads, corks, felts, flat metal resonators, mechanical work, and setup. Since saxophones have so many moving parts, this just takes a long time and a lot of skill to do correctly. But it’s worth the investment because then you get to experience the saxophone as it was meant to sound. And you don’t have to spend any time or money on annoying piecemeal repairs in the near future. The neck has had a pickup removed and plugged, but it was done so well that it is almost invisible. Smooth outside and inside. I didn’t even see it at first, looking closely.
As I mentioned above, this version of the Super Dynaction plays noticeably darker and richer than the later Super Dynaction. This seems to be due to the more curved neck design that these earlier horns have. They were built as competitors to Selmer’s Super (Balanced) Action saxophones, and you can easily hear that when you play a good one like this.
If you have been looking for a high-quality pro tenor that is reasonably priced and is in top playing condition, this would be an excellent choice.
